Gem’s Knit Winter Booties - Version II (made so you will have only ONE seam to sewJ)

Size 8-9

Materials Needed:

Approximately 3 ounces EACH of 100% 4 ply cotton in 2 contrasting colors

(you can use any 4 ply yarn, but the cotton wears so much better and is warmer too)

2 straight size 8 knitting needles

A set of 4 size 8 DPNs

Tapestry needle to sew the back seam

Begin with double strands of cotton, casting on 39 stitches on the straight needles, making cetain to leave a good foot length to use later to sew the heel closed with.

Row 1: K 18, increase 1 in ea of the next 3 sts, K 18 (42 sts)

Row 2: K 20, increase 1 in each of the next 2 sts, K 20 (44 sts)

Row 3: K 19, increase 1 in next st, K 4, Increase 1 in next st, K 19 (46 sts)

Row 4: K 46

Row 5: K 21, increase 1 in next st, K 2, increase 1 in next st, K 21 (48 sts)

Rows 6-29: K

Row 30: SWAP TO DPNS, knitting 16 onto each of 3 needles. Now you will work in ROUNDS rather than ROWS(48 sts)

Round 31 and all remaining ODD # rounds will be done by Purling around.

Rnd 32: K

Rnd 34: K2tog twice, K to last 4 sts, (Sl 1, K 1, PSSO) twice (44 sts)

Rnd 36: Repeat Rnd 34 (40 sts)

Rnd 38: Repeat Rnd 34 (36 sts)

Rnd 40: Repeat Rnd 34 (32 sts)

Rnd 42:K2tog, K to last 2 sts, (sl 1, K 1, PSSO) (30 sts)

Rnds 43-55 P on odd numbers and K on even numbered rnds (30 sts)

Rnd 56: *K2tog, K 3, repeating from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 58: K2tog around (12 sts)

Rnd 60: K2tog around (6sts)

Leaving a foot long tail, cut cotton and thread through tapestry needle. Slip needle through each of the 6 sts and pull tightly. Weave end thoroughly. You should have ended with the WRONG sides together. The WRONG side will be showing the cast on edge facing outward. Now you will use the edge of the cast on stitches, threading the previously left beginning tail through the needle, and beginning at the TOP of the BACK of the heel, sew through those cast on stitches, so you will have a beautiful seam when you finish and turn these booties outside in!
