Baby Cardigan - Knitting Pattern

For protecting against the winter chill or spring showers, your little bundle of joy will look precious in a baby sweater of their very own.  Whether you are expecting a baby, or maybe just in need of a unique shower gift, this knitted infant cardigan is sweet little number.  This is an intermediate knitting pattern that will come together nicely in very little time, based on your skill level.

Difficulty: Intermediate

Materials:  Baby Yarn multicolor pastels (1 oz.) 3 (3-4-4) skeins; 8 Buttons; Stitch holder.

Needles:  Knitting needles No. 1 and No. 3or size to give gauge.

Gauge: 7 sts = 1 inch, 9 rows = 1 inch

*Instructions are for Girl or Boy Infant Sizes. Changes for Sizes 1, 2 and 3 are in parentheses.  Finishes measurements: In inches; Chest (buttoned) 20 (22 l/2-23 1/2-24 1/2)

 

Instructions:

Back: With No. 1 needles cast on 68 (76-80-84) sts.

Ribbing - Row 1: * K 2, P 2; rep from * to end. Rep Row 1 for 14 rows. Change to No. 3 needles. Work in St St (K 1 row, P 1 row) until 6 1/2 (7-7 1/2-8) inches from beg, or desired length to underarms, end with a P row.

Armholes: Bind off 3 (4-5-5) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Next Row: K 2 tog, K to last 2 sts, K 2 tog.

Next Row: Purl.

Rep the last 2 rows twice. Continue St St on 58 (64-66-70) sts until armholes measure 3 (3 l/2- 4- 4 1/2) inches.

Shoulders: Bind off 13 (14-15-17) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place 32 (36-36-36) sts on a stitch holder.

Note: For Boys work right front first. For Girls work left front first. Buttonholes will be worked in left front for Boys and in Right Front for Girls.

First Front: With No. 1 needles, cast on 40 (44-44-48). For Boys beg with K 2 at front edge; for Girls beg with P 2 at underarm edge and work in K 2, P 2 ribbing for 14 rows.

Next Row: Knit and on Size 2 only, inc 2 sts in row. There are 40 (44-46-48) sts on needles.

Next Row For Boys only: P to the last 7 sts, K 7 for front border.

Next Row For Girls Only: K 7 for front border. P to end. Keeping the 7 sts of front border in Garter St (K every row) and remaining sts in St St, work to same length as back to armhole, ending at underarm edge.

Armhole: Bind off 3 (4-5-5) sts at beg of next row. Dec 1 st at armhole edge every 2nd row, twice. Work on 35 (38-39-41) sts until armhole measures 1 1/2 (2-2 1/2-3) inches, ending at front edge.

Neck-Row 1: Work 14 (16-16-16) sts and place these sts on a stitch holder. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 8 times. Work on 13 (14-15-17) sts until armhole is the same length as back armhole. K 6 rows on all sts for garter st. Bind off. Mark places with pins on front border and rib band for buttons, having first marker 1/2 inch from lower edge, 7th marker 1/2 inch from beg of neck (the 8th button will be in center of a 1 -inch neck-hand).

To Work Buttonholes in Second Front, opposite button markers: Beg at front edge K 3 sts, yo, K 2 tog, K 2, work to end. On the next row the yo is worked as 1 st.

Second Front: Work to correspond to First Front, reversing all shaping and working buttonholes opposite markers.

Sleeves: With No. 1 needles, cast on 36 (40-44-48) sts. Rib as on back for 10 rows, inc 6 sts evenly across last row. Change to No. 3 needles. Work in St St, inc 1 st each side every 6 rows, 5 times. Work on 52 (56-60-64) to 7 (8-9-10) inches from beg, or desired length to underarms. Bind off 3 (4-5-5) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 3 (4-10-12) times, every row 10 (10-5-5) times. Bind off 20 sts.

Finishing: Block lightly, sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.

Neckband: With No. 1 needles from right side and beg at front edge, K across sts on holder, pick up 6 sts on shaped neck edge. K across sts on holder, pick up 6 sts on shaped neck edge, K across sts on holder.

Keeping borders as established work remaining sts in K 2, P 2 or K 1, P 1 ribbing for 4 rows, work buttonhole in next row in line with other buttonholes. Work 4 rows more in pat as established. Bind off in pat. Sew buttons on front band opposite buttonholes.
