Afghan: Lower Border: Cast on 225 sts; do not join. Work back and forth as follows: work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 2 rows. Row 3: K 1, inc 1 st in next st, k to within last 2 sts, end inc 1 st in next st, k l—2 sts inc. Row 4: Purl. Rows 5-10: Repeat last 2 rows 3 times. Row 11: (picot row): K 1, * k 2 tog yo, repeat from * across, end k 233sts. Row 12: Purl. Row 13: K 1, k 2 tog, k to within last 3 sts, end k 2 tog, k 1—2 sts dec. Row 14: Purl. Rows 15-20: Repeat last 2 rows 3 times— 225 sts. Row 21 (beading row): Repeat row 11. P1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row. Pattern: Row 1 (right side): * Work first 21 sts in pat 1, put a marker on work, work next 13 sts in pat 2, put a marker on work, repeat from * across, end work last 2l sts in pat 1. Row 2: Slipping markers, purl. Work in pat as established until pat 1 is worked 13 times, end pat 1, row 28. Remove markers. Upper Border: K 1 row, p 1 row. Work picot row for beading. P 1 row. Repeat rows 3 and 4 of lower border 4 times —233 sts. Work picot row. Repeat rows 12 and 13, 4 times—225 sts. P 1 row Bind off same tension as sts. Side Borders: From wrong side, beg 1 st below beading row and having an odd number of sts, pick up and k 1 st in every other row along side edge. Work picot row for beading, then continue same as for top border. Work other side of afghan in same manner. Finishing: Block pieces. Sew mitered corners tog. Fold borders in half along outer picot row to wrong side; hem in place. Place afghan on a flat surface and weave 1/4" wide ribbing through eyelets on each side of pat 1, tack ends to wrong side. Weave 3/8" ribbing through beading row of border, tying a bow at each corner. |
