Free Knitting Pattern - Cable Afghan
Materials: Red Heart®,
(4 "Tangleproof" Pull Out Skeins): Knitting Worsted, 4 Ply, Art. E.234: 11 skeins of No. 111 Eggshell or
color desired;
OR "Wintuk", 4 Ply, Art. E.267: 11 skeins of
No. 111 Eggshell; Circular Needle, No. 15, 36-inch length; A Double-pointed Needle or a Cable Stitch
Holder; markers.
Gauge: 5 cellular stitches
= 2 1/2 inches; 13 rows = 4". Be sure to check your gauge before starting
afghan. Use any size needle which will obtain the stitch gauge above.
Pattern: 2 strands held together throughout.
A circular needle is recommended to
accommodate the large number of stitches. Do not join. Work in rows.
Starting at long edge, with 2 strands held
together, cast on 120 sts. Do not join, turn.
Row 1—wrong side: Yo,
sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, (yo, k 1, yo, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso) 6 times; yo, k 1, yo—cellular
panel; * place a marker on needle, p 1, place another marker on needle, k 2, p
12, k 2—horseshoe panel; place a marker, p 1, place another marker, yo, sl 1,
k 2 tog, psso, (yo, k 1, yo, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso) 6 times; yo, k 1, yo. Repeat
from * once more.
Note: Be careful not to drop the yo at beg or
end of row. Each yo is worked as a st.
3 cellular panels and 2 horseshoe panels have
been started.
Row 2: * P across to next marker, slip marker, k 1, slip
marker, p 2, k 12, p 2, slip marker, k 1, slip marker. Repeat from * once more;
p remaining sts.
Always slip markers.
Row 3: Yo, k 2 tog, (yo
sl 1 k 2 tog, psso, yo, k 1) 6 times; yo, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, * p1, k2, p12, k2, p1
yo k2 tog, (yo, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, yo, k 1) 6 times; yo, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso.
Repeat from * once more.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: Yo, sl 1, k 2

across to next marker, k 1, p 2, slip next 3 sts onto dp needle and hold in back
of work, k next 3 sts, k the 3 sts from dp needle, slip next 3 sts onto dp
needle and hold in front of work, k next 3 sts, k the 3 sts from dp needle, p 2,
k 1. Repeat from * once more, p remaining sts.
Row 7: Repeat Row 3.
Row 8:
Repeat Row 2.
Row 9: Repeat Row 5.
Repeat last 8 rows
(Rows 2-9) for pattern. Work in pattern until afghan measures about 59 inches,
ending with Row 9. Bind off.
Pin to measurements, dampen and leave to dry.
