Free Christmas Knitting
Pattern - Santa Hat
Materials: 1 3.5 oz. skein of white 4 ply worsted weight yarn;
1 3.5 oz. skein of red 4 ply worsted weight yarn; Numbers 4 and 6 circular knitting needles;
1 dozen knitting markers; 2 in. white pompom; Tapestry needle; Scissors.
Finished Measurements: 18 inches in diameter at ribbed edge; 20 inches from
ribbed edge to pom pom. (The hat stretches to fit most adults)
Gauge: With number 6 needles in stockinette stitch, 10 stitches and 13 rows
equal 2 inches. To save time, check gauge.
Instruction: With number 4 circular needles and white yarn, cast on 108 stitches. Place a st marker
at end of row. Being careful not to twist sts, join.
Rnd 1: *K1, P1, repeat from * around. Repeat Rnd 1 until work measures 3 inches.
Rnd 2: (Changing to red yarn, work this rnd onto number 6 circular needles.) K
around. Repeat Rnd 2 for 3 inches until length of entire work measures 6 inches. (Continue
working on number 6 circular needles, changing to dpn when decrease in number of sts makes
it necessary.)
Rnd 3: * K9, place marker, repeat from * around.
Rnd 4: * K to marker and sl marker, K2 tog, repeat from * around -- 96 stitches.
Rnd 5-15: K around. Repeat Rnds 4-15 seven times more. Remove all except the
first marker when 12 sts remain.
Rnd 16: K2 tog around -- 6 sts.
Rnd 17: K2 tog around -- 3 sts. Cut yarn, draw through remaining sts and secure
with tapestry needle.
Finishing: Sew pompons onto tip of hat with tapestry needle.
