Pattern - Holiday Sweater
Designed by: Rhonda Leinen
Directions are given for small (6-8; bust
29-31 inches), with medium (10-12; bust 32-34) and large (14-16; bust 36-38) in
parentheses. You will need 5 (5, 6) 4 ounce skeins of Bucilla Softex Win-knit,
numbers 9 and 10-1/2 knitting needles, cable holder and size J crochet hook.
Gauge: 5 bobbles equal 4 inches. TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
Body Pattern:
Rows 1 and 3: Sl 1, p across.
Row 2: Sl 1, * (k 1, p1, k 1) in next st, p next
3 sts tog, repeat from * across, ending k 1.
Row 3: See row 1 above.
Row 4: Sl 1, * p 3 tog, (k 1, p 1, k 1) in next
st, repeat from * across, ending k 1.
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.
BODY: With smaller needles, cast on
66 (70, 74) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 2¼ inches. Change to larger needles, work in body pattern for 10(12,
14) inches or desired length from waist to armhole.
Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts in pattern at
beginning of next 2 rows —50(54, 58) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7½
(8, 81/2) inches.
Shape Neckline: Work 15 (17, 19) sts, bind off
20 sts in pattern, work next 15 (17, 19) sts.
Next Row: Work first set of sts, cast on 10
sts. Join second ball of yarn to left-hand needle, cast on 10 sts. Using this
second ball of yarn, work cast on sts as follows: k 2, p 3 tog, (k 1, p1, k 1)
in next st, continue in pattern across. Work in pattern using both balls of
yarn, k 2 at end of first set of sts and 2 at beginning of next set for 6
inches, ending with pattern row. On next row, p across entire 50 (54, 58) sts,
dropping second ball of yarn, rejoining neckline. Continue in pattern, omitting
4 k sts at center, for 1-3/4 (2¼, 2-1/4) inches, ending with pattern row.
Armhole: Cast on 8 sts at beginning of next 2
rows, working additional sts to correspond to pattern — 66 (70, 74) sts. Work
even for 10 (12, 14) inches or length of back. Change to smaller needles, work
in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 2¼ inches. Bind off.
SLEEVES: With smaller needles, cast on 35 sts.
Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 2¼ inches. Change to larger needles.
Next Row: Sl 1, k in front and back of each St across —69 sts.
SLEEVE PATTERN: Row 1: (Wrong Side) P 8, k 2,
p 9, k 2, (p 6, k 1) 3 times, p6, k 2, p9, k 2, p 8.
Row 2: K 8, p 2, k 9, p 2, k 6, p1, * k 2,
yarn in back, sl next 2 sts as if top, k 2, p 1, repeat from * once more, k 6, p 2,
k 9, p 2, k 8.
Row 3: P 8, k 2, p 9, k 2, p 6, k 1, *p 2, yarn in front, sl 2 sts purlwise, p 2, k 1,
repeat from * once more, p 6, k 2, p 9,
k 2, p 8.
Row 4: K 2, * k 3, yo, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, yo,
p 2, yo, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, yo *, repeat between stars, k 3, p 1, **sl next 2
sts to holder, hold in back of work, k next st, k sts from holder (right cross
made), sl next at to holder, hold in front, k next 2 sts, k st from holder (left
cross made), p 1, repeat from ** once more, work between *'s twice, k 5.
Continue these four pattern rows for 18 (20,
21) inches or desired length of sleeve. Bind off loosely, omitting pattern, k
the k sts, p the p sts.
COLLAR:
Row 1: Join yarn to lower point of
neck ‘V.’ With crochet hook, beginning on right side, sc around entire
neckline to beginning.
Row 2: S1 St in first sc, ch 5, * in 2nd sc
from ch, ch 5, repeat from * to base of stand up collar. Treble crochet (make
by wrapping yarn around hook twice, insert hook in work, yo and through 2 lps,
work off remainder of st in same manner) in each sc around collar, ch 5, sc in
base of left side of collar, ch 5, *sc in second st from ch, ch 5, continue
from * to point of ‘V.’
Row 3: * Ch 5, sc in sc of previous row,
repeat from * to tr. **Ch 3, sc in next tr, repeat from ** to end of tr.
Repeat from * to correspond to other side of ‘V.’ Fasten off.
Ties: (Optional) Ch 50, attach to base of
collar on left side for tie. Repeat on right side.
Finishing: Backstitch seams of sleeves and body. Pin sleeves
to body, matching seams. Crosses on sleeve should be at top of shoulder with
purl dividing row even with bound off row of neckline. Sew, easing sleeve to
fit.
