Patchwork Quilt Patterns: The Famous Ruby McKim Book Plus A Bonus Of
105 Vintage Patterns.
Tools and equipment: Scissors; pins,
needles; sewing machine; yardstick; iron; quilting needles; thimble.
Size: Approximately 44 x 52 inches.
Pattern: Pattern and piece
placement at bottom of page.
Instruction:
1. Wash, dry, and press all fabrics.
2. Cut 16 rectangles, each 9-1/2 x 11-1/2
inches, from the white fabric. Cut the following number of 1-1/2 x 11-1/2-inch
strips from the scrap fabrics (using as many different fabrics as you have
available): 24 brown, 20 yellow, and 20 orange. (These measurements include
1/4-inch seam allowances.)
3. Following pattern, cut pieces for cat appliques, adding 1/4-inch seam allowances to each piece. Cut out enough pieces
for 6 yellow, 5 orange, and 5 brown cats. Make ears and paws from the same
fabric, head and body from another fabric, tail and legs from a different
fabric, and nose from another fabric. Clip seam allowances as needed, and press
to back.
4. To make a single appliqued block,
pin body to a white rectangle, with bottom line of body 2 inches from bottom of
rectangle, centered from side to side. Pin legs in place, tucking side of leg
where it meets side of body over the edge of body. Pin paws on. Clip tail where
shown on pattern, and press under all of tail except from slit up. Slip this
seam allowance above slit under body and pin. Pin rest of tail over body seam
allowance. Pin head in place, ears under, nose over, with top seam allowance
tucked under top of head. Applique all parts in place.

Draw mouth, nose, eyes, and pupils in with
pencil. Embroider in outline stitch with 1 strand of floss, using 2 to fill in
pupils and nose with satin stitch.
Using a 1/4-inch seam, sew one strip to each
of the long sides of the rectangle. Press seams toward the strips. Orange cat
has yellow strips, yellow has brown, brown has orange. Sew strips on top and
bottom, and press seams toward strips.
Place completed appliqued rectangle, right
side up, on same-size rectangles of batting and backing fabric, right side down.
For yellow cat, use yellow backing fabric; for orange cat, orange fabric, for
brown. brown. Smooth out layers and pin securely. Edges should match.
Quilt around cat outline 1/4 inch or so from
edge, and quilt 1/4 inch inside edge of white rectangle with quilting thread.
5. When all rectangles are finished, sew them
together in rows 4 across, then sew the 4 rows together to form quilt top. See
photograph above for arrangement. To sew rectangles together, first sew just the
edges of quilt-top rectangles together in a 1/4-inch seam, pinning backing and
batting out of the way. Turn over to back, and smooth edges of batting flat,
trimming one edge a bit. Smooth one edge of backing fabric over the top of the
batting, turn the other edge under 1/4 inch, pin, and sew down with a slip
stitch. Do not go through to the front of the quilt. This seam should be over
the seam on the quilt top.
Quilt on both sides of seams that join the
rectangles together, stopping 1/2 inch from quilt edge. Turn edges of completed
quilt under 1/4 inch and pin together. Close with slip stitch.
