Tatting Patterns - Hearts Doily

The delicate artistry of tatting lends an
heirloom quality to this lovely doily. When made with size 30 crochet cotton the
doily measures approximately 9 inches. You will need a tatting shuttle and a
ball of size 30 crochet cotton in the color of your choice.
Abbreviations: r (ring) ds (double
stitch) p (picot) cl r (close ring) sep (separated) rw (reverse work) ch (chain)
rnd (round)
First Medallion: R of 7 ds, 6 p sep by
8 ds, 1 ds, cl r. Tie and cut threads.
Rnd 1: Make a r of 4 ds, 4 p sep by 3 ds, 3
ds, a 1 inch p (to make a 1 inch p: cut a piece of cardboard 1 inch wide, make
first half of stitch, insert cardboard, with thread around cardboard, make last
half of stitch. Remove cardboard and continue tatting as usual), 3 ds, 4 p sep
by 3 ds, 4 ds, cl r, rw. Tie ball thread to shuttle thread, ch 26 ds, a small p,
22 ds, join 1 inch p in p of center r (when joining 1 inch p to center r insert
hook from underside of the 1 inch p and down through p on center r), ch 22
ds, small p, ch 26 ds, join in base of last r made, rw. * Ch 6 ds, 9 p sep by 2
ds, 6 ds, join to next small p of ch, ch 6 ds, 9 p sep by 2
ds, 6 ds, rw. R of 4 ds, 4 p sep by 3 ds, 3 ds, a 1 inch p, 3 ds, 4 p sep by 3
ds, 4 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 26 (this ch fits inside the last ch made), join to same
small p of adjacent ch where last ch was joined, ch 22 ds, join 1 inch p of last
r to next p of center r, ch 22 ds, a small p, ch 26 ds, join at base of last r
made, rw. Repeat from * until 6 hearts are made, be sure to join last long ch to
small p of first long ch. After joining in last small p, ch 6 ds, 9 p sep by 2
ds, 6 ds, join in base of first r. Tie and cut threads.
Make a second medallion in same manner as
first medallion joining the 7th and 8th p of one 9 p ch of one heart and the
second and third p of next 9 p ch of same heart to corresponding p of first
medallion.
Make 4 more medallions, joining each to last
medallion made and also to the next heart of first medallion. The seventh (last)
medallion must be joined in same manner to the sixth medallion, the first
medallion and the second medallion. Tie and cut threads.
Pin doily in shape and spray with starch.
Allow to dry thoroughly before removing pins.
