Here is a versatile square doily to add to your collection. The completed model measures about 7 inches square when made with number 20 crochet thread. Use ball and shuttle.

Abbreviations: (ring) ch (chain) ds (double stitch) cl r (close ring) rnd (round) Sep (separated) p (picot).

To begin, make a r of (4 ds, p) 3 times, 4 ds, cl r, tie and cut.

Rose Center: With ball and shuttle, join thread to a p, (ch 6 ds, join to next p) 3 times, 6 ds, join, tie and cut.

Next Rnd: (Ch 8 ds, join to p) 3 times, ch 8 ds. Work next 3 rnds in same manner, making ch of 2 greater each time between joinings to p on each rnd—l0 ds, 12 ds, 14 ds.

Last Rnd: * Ch 6 ds, (p, 2 ds) twice, p, 6 ds, join, repeat from * around. Tie and cut. This completes the center rose.

Rnd 1: * R of 4 ds, join to first p of a 3 p group on ch, 4 ds, cl r. Ch 5 ds, (p, 2 ds) twice, p, 5 ds. R of 4 ds, join to third p of same 3 p group on ch, 4 ds, cl r.
