Tatting Patterns - Circle of Crosses Doily
To make a doily measuring approximately 10
inches in diameter you will need a ball of number 30 crochet cotton in white or color of your choice and a tatting shuttle.
Abbreviations: r (ring) ds (double stitch) p (picot) cl r (close ring) rw
(reverse work) sep (separated) rnd (round) ch (chain)
Center: Make a large r of 2 ds, 9 p
sep by 4 ds, cl r. Tie and cut threads.
Rnd 1: R of 4 ds, p, 4 ds, join to p on center r, 4 ds, p, 4 ds,
cl r. Tie ball thread to shuttle thread, * ch 6 ds, 2 p sep by 4 ds, 6 ds, rw.
R of 4 ds, join to last p of last r, 4 ds, join to next p of center r, 4 ds, p, 4 ds,
cl r, rw. Repeat from * 7 times being sure to join last p of last r to first p
of first r, end with ch 6 ds, 2 p sep by 4 ds, 6 ds, join at base of first r. Tie and cut
threads.
First Cross: You are now ready to
start making the crosses which form the outer circle of doily. The ball and
shuttle threads are used throughout each cross.

This completes one half of cross, work the
second half of cross to correspond except to join the center p of each on second
half to corresponding p on first half. After completing the last r of second
half which is joined to p of first small r, rw. Ch 4 ds, 2 p sep by 4 ds, 4 ds,
join to free p of same ch where first joining of cross was made. Tie and cut
threads.
Second Cross: Small r of 4 ds, p, 4
ds, cl r, rw. With ball and shuttle threads, ch 4 ds, join in first free p of
next ch in rnd 1, ch 4 ds, join in first free (center) p of last ch on first
cross, 4 ds, join in next p of same ch on first cross, 4 ds, rw. R of 4 ds, p, 4
ds, join in p of small r, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 4 ds, p, 2 ds, join in
corresponding p of next ch on first cross, 2 ds, p, 4 ds, rw. Now work in same
manner as for first half of first cross until you have made the third r of arm,

Complete remaining portion of second cross in
same manner as for first cross. Tie and cut threads.
Make and join 7 more crosses in same manner. Be sure to
join last half of last cross to p on first half of first cross in same manner as
the preceding crosses have been joined.
