Knitting Patterns - Boys Sweater

Size: 3 and 4 Years. Instructions are
written for size 3 years, changes for size 4 years are in parentheses.
Materials: Sport Knitting Worsted, 2 (3)
skeins color of choice; Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Sizes 3 and 5.
Gauge: Size 5 needles—7 rows = 1 inch
Measurements: Chest 23 (24) ins. Length from
lower edge to underarm 8 1/2 (9 1/2) ins. Sleeves—Width 8 (8 1/2) ins.
Pocket Linings: With size 5 needles, cast on
21 sts.
First row: K 1, * p 1, k 1; repeat from * to
end.
2nd row: P 1, * k 1, p 1; repeat from * to end. Work
even until 2 1/4 (2 1/2) ins, from beginning, end with 2nd row. Slip to holder; make
2.
Back and Fronts: With size 3 needles, cast on
143 (151) sts for lower edge of back and fronts. Work ribbing as for pocket
lining for 18 rows. Change to size 5 needles. Continue ribbing until 3 1/4 (4)
ins, from beginning, end with 2nd row—right side.
Next row: Work 11 sts, bind
off next 21 sts for pocket, work to within 32 sts at end, bind of next 21 sts,
finish row.
Next row: Work 11 sts, take up and work 21 sts of one
pocket lining matching
ribbing, work to 2nd pocket opening, work sts of other lining, finish row. Work
even until 8 1/2 (9 1/2) ins. or desired length to underarm, end on right side.
Armhole: Dec. 1 st at beginning of next row for neck shaping, work until 33
(35) sts on needle, slip on holder for left front, bind off 7 sts for underarm,
work until 61 (65) sts from bind-off, slip on holder for back, bind off 7 sts
for underarm, finish row decreasing 1 st at end.
Right Front: Work the 33 (35)
sts. Dec. 1 st at armhole edge every 2nd row once (twice); continue decreasing 1
st at front edge every 2nd row until 18 sts remain.
Work even until 4 1/2 (5) inches above underarm. Bind off 9 sts from armhole
edge twice.
Back: Slip 61 (65) sts to needle. Beginning at right armhole, dec. 1
st each side every 2nd row once (twice); 59 (61) sts. Work even until 4 1/2 (5)
inches above underarm.
Shoulders: Bind off 9 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off 23
(25) sts for neck.
Left Front: Slip sts to needle. Beginning at underarm edge, work to
correspond to fight front.
Sleeves: With size
3 needles, cast on 44 (46) sts. Work k 1, p 1, ribbing for 18 rows. Change to
size 5 needles. Work 1 in. even. Inc. 1 st each side of next row; repeat
increases every 2 ins. 3 times; 52 (54) sts. Work even until 10 1/2 ( 11 1/2)
ins. from beginning or desired length to underarm. Bind off 3 sts at beginning
of next 2 rows; 2 sts at beginning of next 10 (12) rows. Bind off 26 (24) sts.
Band: With size 3 needles, cast on 10 sts. Work k 1. p 1 ribbing for 4 rows. Buttonhole—Continue ribbing,
work first 5 sts only for 3 rows keeping remaining sts on back of needle. Break
yarn. Beginning at center, work other 5 sts for 3 rows. Next row, work all sts.
Repeat buttonhole having about 1 1/4 (1 1/2) ins, between buttonholes until
there are 5 buttonholes in all or if length to underarm was changed divide space
evenly. Top buttonhole should be 8 1/2 (9 1/2) ins, above lower edge when
slightly stretched. Work even until band when slightly stretched will reach
around both fronts and neck edge. Bind off.
Finishing: Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with seam at center
underarm. Sew edges of pocket linings to wrong side. Sew band around front and
neck edges with top buttonhole just below point of first dec. on left front
edge. Finish buttonholes. Steam. Using medium size crochet hook, work 1 row slip
st on edge of band from right side.
