Knitting Patterns - Girls Sweater
Materials: Sock and sport yarn, 2 skeins each of 2 colors
"A" and "B"; knitting needles, 1 pair each of sizes 1 and 3.
Size: For size 1 year,
changes for size 2 years are in parentheses.
Measurements: Chest 20 1/2 (22) ins. Sleeves—Width
8 (8 1/2) ins.
Gauge: 8 sts = 1"; 16
rows = 1".
Back: With size 3 needles and A, cast on 79 (83) sts,
drop A.
First row—right side—With
B, k 3, * slip 1 st as to p, k 3; repeat from * to end.
2nd row—K 3, *
p 1, k 3; repeat from * to end, drop B.
3rd row—With A, k 1,
* slip 1, k 3;
repeat from *, end slip 1, k 1.
4th row—K 1,
* p 1, k 3; repeat
from *, end p 1, k 1. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern, work until 7 1/2 (8) ins, from beginning, end with 4th pattern row.
Armholes—Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next
2 rows for underarm; 71 (75) sts. Work even until 3 1/2 (3 3/4) ins. above
underarm; end on right side with first pattern row.
Next row—Work 20 (21) sts
and slip to holder for left front, bind off 31 (33) sts for back of neck. Work 2
ins. on remaining sts, keeping pattern, end at neck edge with 3rd pattern row.
Drop A.
Right Front: With extra strand of B, cast on 15 (18) sts
on left hand needle for neck edge, take up A, continue across working the
cast-on sts; 35 (39) sts. Work even until 8 ( 8 1/2) ins. from underarm of back,
end with 4th pattern row. With A, cast on 4 sts for underarm; 39 (43) sts. With
B continue pattern. Work even until same length as back form lower edge to
underarm, end with 2md pattern row. Bind off with A.
Left Front: Slip sts from holder to needle. With A,
beginning at neck edge work 2 ins. even, end at neck edge with B. With B cast on
15 (18) sts. Join A and work as for 3rd pattern row. Finish to correspond to
right front casting on for underarm at opposite side.
Sleeves: With
A and
size 1 needles, cast on 41 (45) sts. K 9 rows—garter st.
Next row—K,
increasing 1 st in every 4th st 10 times; 51 (55) sts. Drop A. Work pattern as
for back, beginning with B and first pattern row, increasing 1 st each side
every 1 in. 6 times, keeping pattern; 63 (67) sts, Work even until 8 (8 1/2)
ins, or desired length from beginning. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 10
rows. Bind off 23 (27) sts.
Finishing: Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with
seam at center underarm.
Front Borders - Left Front: With
size 1 needles and A, cast on 6 sts. K until 10 (10 3/4) ins. Slip
sts on holder. Right Front: Work as for left front until 1/2 (1) inch.
* row—K 2,
bind off 2 sts for buttonhole, k to end. Cast on 2 sts over the 2 bound-off sts in next
row. K 2 ins., including last buttonhole. Repeat from
* until there are 5 buttonholes in all. Work even until same length as
left front border. Sew borders to fronts.
Neck Border: K the 6 sts of right front
border, pick up and k 13 (16) sts at front edge, 12 sts on shoulder edge, 30
(32) sts across back of neck, 12 sts on other shoulder edge, 13 (16) sts on
left front edge, k across 6 border sts; 92 (100) sts. K 1 row.
First dec. row: Right side — K 16 (19), * k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 6, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog
*, k 24 (26); repeat between *'s once, k 16 (19); 84 (92) sts. K 1 row. Next
row, k 2, bind off 2 sts for 6th buttonhole, k to end. Cast on 2 sts over the
2 bound-off sts in next row.
2nd dec. row—K 15 (18), * k 2 tog, k 2,
k 2 tog, k 4, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog *, k 22 (24); repeat between *'s
once, k to end. K 2 rows. Bind off 76 (84) sts. Finish buttonholes. Steam.
