Knitting Patterns - Boys Snow Suit

Size: 4 and 6 years. Instructions are written for size 4 years with
changes for size 6 in parentheses.
Materials: Knitting worsted 3 (3 1/2) skeins for windbreaker, leggings
3 (3 1/2) skeins and cap 1 skein. 14" double pointed knitting needles, 2
pairs size 4. Knitting needles, 1 pair size 2.

Gauge: 6 sts = 1"; 15 rows = 2".
Windbreaker: Measurements; Chest 27 1/2 (29 1/2) inches. Length from
lower edge to back of neck 15 1/2 (17 1/2) inches. Sleeves; width 10 (11)
inches.
With double pointed needles, cast on 32 sts. P 1 row.
First
row of raglan: Inc. 1 st in each
of the first 2 sts, k 1, mark last st for first seam st; inc. 1 st in next st,
k 2, inc. 1 st for sleeve, k 1, mark this st for
2nd seam st; inc. 1 st, k 14, inc. 1 st for back, k 1, mark this for 3rd seam
st; inc. 1 st, k 2, inc. 1 st for sleeve, k 1, mark this for 4th seam st; inc.
1 st in each of last 2 sts; 10 increases—42 sts. 2nd and all even rows—Purl. 3rd row—Inc. 1 st
in first st, k 2, inc. 1 st for front, k 1, inc. 1 st, k 4, inc. 1 st, k 1,
inc. 1 st, k 16, inc. 1 st, k 1, inc. 1 st, k 4, inc. 1 st, k 1, inc. 1 st, k
2, inc. 1 st in last st for front. Continue to inc. at beginning and end and
on each side of the 4 seam sts, every k row, having 2 sts more between
increases after each inc. row, until there are 5 (6) inc. rows; 82 (92) sts,
end with p row. Next row— Cast on 16 sts, k 27 (29) for front, inc. 1 st
each side of the 4 seam sts as before, k, omitting Inc. at end. Cast on 16 sts
at beginning of next row, p all sts; 122 (132) sts.
Buttonholes—K 3, bind off 2 sts for first buttonhole, k until there are
5 sts from first buttonhole, bind off 2 sts for 2nd buttonhole, finish row,
increasing 1 st each side of the 4 seam sts as before. Cast on 2 sts over each
buttonhole on next row. Place sts up to 2nd seam st on one needle; all sts up
to and including 3rd seam st - back - on 2nd needle; all sts of right sleeve
and right front on 3rd needle. Continue increases on each side of seam sts,
keeping front edges eve, working back and forth s before. Repeat buttonholes
every 19th and 20th (23rd and 24th) row on left front. Work until there are
290 (308) sts, end with p row.
Next row: K 51 (54) sts, including
seam st, slip to holder for left front; k next 58 (62) sleeve sts, keep on
needle; slip the next 72 (76)- back- sts; 58 (62) sleeve sts; 51 (54)
right front sts, each group to a separate holder.
Left Sleeve—Cast on 2 sts at beginning of next 2 rows
for underarm; 62 (66) sts. Continue stockinette st; decreasing 1 st each side
every 4th row twice, every 6th row 7 (9) times; 44 sts. Work even until 7 1/2
(9) ins., or desired length from underarm, allowing 3 ins. for cuff. Change to
size 2 needles. Work ribbing of k 2, for 3 ins. Bind off in ribbing.
Right Sleeve—Slip sts of right sleeve to needle.
Working from right side, k 1 row. Finish as for left sleeve. Sew sleeve seams.
Lower Part—Slip left front sts to one needle, slip
sts of back to 2nd needle and right front sts to 3rd needle. Working from right
side, beginning at underarm of left sleeve, pick up and k 4 sts on the 4 cast-on
sts of left underarm, k across back, pick up and k 4 sts on right underarm, k to
end; 182 (192) sts. Work even and repeat buttonholes, until 5 (6 1/2) ins. from
underarm, 4 sets of buttonholes in all, end with p row. Change to size 2
needles. Bind off 7 (8) sts at beginning of next row, with 1 st on needle k 1, p
2, continue k 2, p 2 ribbing to within 7 (8) sts of end, bind off remaining sts.
Join yarn, work 1 row of ribbing; 168 (176) sts. Next row—K 2, p 2, bind
off 2 sts for buttonhole, finish row. Cast on 2 sts over the 2 bound-off sts on
next row. Work 16 (20) rows of ribbing. Work 1 buttonhole on next 2 rows. Work 4
rows of ribbing. Bind off in ribbing. Fold buttonhole band, hem on wrong side.
Finish buttonholes.
Collar—With size 4 needles, cast
on 30 (34) sts. P 1 row. Continue stockinette st, casting on 4 sts at beginning
of next 8 rows; 62 (66) sts. K 1 row, p 1 row. First inc. row—Inc. 1 st
in first st, k to within 2 sts of end, inc. 1 st in next st, k last st. Repeat
inc. every 4th row 3 (4) times; 70 (76) sts. P 1 row. K 3 rows for turning
ridge, p 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row. First dec. row—K 2 tog, inserting
needle in back of sts; k to within 2 sts of end; k 2 tog inserting needle in
front of sts. Repeat dec. every 4th row 3 (4) times. P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 8 rows. Bind off 30 (34) sts.
Finishing—Fold collar double, sew
side seams. With weaving st sew cast-on edge to neck, with right side of collar
to right side of windbreaker, short ends at center of front. Sew bound-off edge
to wrong side of neck. Steam.
Leggings: Measurements; Waist 24 (25) inches. Length
from lower edge to crotch 16 (18). Length from crotch to top of waist at front,
including ribbing, 10 1/2 (11) inches.
Left Leg: With size 4 needles, cast on 52 sts for lower
edge. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 (3 1/2) ins. Inc. row: For size 4, k 3,
* inc. 1 st in next st, repeat between *'s, end last repeat k 2; 76 sts (For
size 6, inc. 1 st in every 2nd st 26 times; 78 sts). Work stockinette st, p 1
row, k 1 row; increasing 1 st each side every 6th row 15 (17) times; 106 (112)
sts. Work even until 13 (14 1/2) inches above ribbing. Bind off 3 sts at
beginning of next 2 rows for crotch. Dec. 1 st each side every 4th row 14 (15)
times; 72 (76) sts. Work even until 8 (8 1/2) inches above crotch, end at back
edge with a p row. Begin short rows: 1st row: K 48 sts, turn. 2nd
row: Slip 1, p to to end. 3rd row: K 40, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd
row. 5th row: K 32, turn. Continue to work 8 sts less every 2nd row 3
times more. 12th row: Same as 2nd row. Next row: K 7, with point
of right needle, take up st directly below next slipped st place it on left
needle, k this st together with slipped st to prevent hole, k to end of row
working all slipped sts in this way. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 2
1/2". Bind off in ribbing.
Right Leg: Work same as left leg up to short rows, end
at back edge with a k row. Begin short rows. 1st row: P 48, turn. 2nd
row: Slip 1, k to end. Work 10 more short rows to correspond to right leg. Next
row: P all sts working each slipped st together with st directly below.
Finish as for right leg.
Straps: With size 4 needles, cast on 10 sts. Work
stockinette st for 6 rows. Cast on 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Buttonhole:
Work 5 rows on the first 10 sts only, end at center of strap, break off.
Beginning at center, work 5 rows on remaining 10 sts, end at side edge. Next
row: Work all 20 sts. Work stockinette st until 15 (17) inches form
buttonhole. Work a 2nd buttonhole. Work 1 row after buttonhole is completed.
Bind off 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Work 6 rows even. Bind off.. Make 2.
Finishing: Steam. Sew seam of each leg up to crotch.
Sew front edges of each leg together above crotch. Sew back edges together. Fold
narrow part of strap at each end into a point on wrong side and sew. Fold side
edges over on wrong side and sew at center, leaving openings in seam opposite
each buttonhole. Sew 4 buttons on ribbing at top of pants for straps.
Cap: With size 4 needle, cast on 96 sts. Work k 2, p 2
ribbing for 6 ins. K 1 row, knitting every 23rd and 24th st tog, 3 times; 93 sts. Work stockinette st for 2 ins., end with p row. Dec. row—K 1, *
slip, k and pass, k 18, k 2 tog, k 1; repeat from * 3 times. P 1 row. Repeat
last 2 rows having 2 sts less between dec after each dec. row, until there are
21 sts in row, end with p row. K 2 tog, 10 times in succession, k 1; 11 sts.
Break yarn. Draw end through all sts twice. Fasten off. Sew seam. Steam. Make
pompon, sew to top of cap.
