Knitting Patterns - Boy & Girl Cardigans

Sizes: Directions are for size 1. Changes for sizes 2 and 3 are in
parentheses. Body Chest size; 20", (21", 22") Blocked chest size:
22" (23", 24").
Materials: Nylon and wool knitting worsted: For girl, 2, 4-oz. skeins
pink, main color (MC); 1 skein each of white (A) and light blue (B). For Boy, 2,
4-oz. skeins light blue, main color (MC); 1 skein each of white (A) and pink
(B). Knitting needles Nos. 4 and 8. (Or English sizes 9 and 5.) Steel crochet
hook No. 0. Five buttons.
Gauge: 5 sts = 1" (pat, No. 8 needles). 11 sts = 2"; 8 rows
= 1" (ribbing before blocking, No. 8 needles).
Cardigan Back: With MC and No. 8 needles, cast on 59 (61-65) sts.
Ribbing:
Row 1 (right side): P 1, * k 1, p 1, repeat from * across.
Row 2: K 1, * p 1, k 1, repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows for 7
1/2" (8"-9").
Shape Armholes: Bind off in ribbing 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then
dec l st each side every other row twice—49 (51-55) sts. Work even in ribbing
until armholes measure 4 1/2" (4 1/2"-4 3/4") above first
bound-off sts.
Shape Shoulders: Bind off in ribbing 5 sts at beg of next 4 rows, 4 (5-6)
sts next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 21(21-23) sts for back of neck.
Buttonhole Note: For Girls’ Cardigan, work left front first; for
Boys’ Cardigan, work right front first. When first front is completed,
with pins mark position of 5 buttons evenly spaced on center band: first one
1" above hemline, last one 1/2" below neck edge. When working 2nd
front, form double buttonholes opposite markers as follows:
Double Buttonholes: Beg at center edge, work first 2 sts, bind off next 2
sts, work until 5 sts from bound-off sts, bind off next 2 sts, finish row. Next
Row: Cast on 2 sts over bound-off sts.
Pattern Note: Sl all sl sts as if to p, holding yarn on wrong side. Carry
unused colors loosely up side, twisting colors every other row.
Left Front: With A and No. 8 needles, cast on 24 (28-28) sts. Work in
stockinette st for 5 rows (hem). Next Row: Cast on 13 sts for center band
at beg of row and k across this row (wrong side) for hemline—37 (41-41) sts. K
1 row, p 1 row. See Buttonhole Note. Work as follows:
Pattern (multiple of 4 sts plus 1):
Row 1 (right side): With MC, k 1, * sl 1, k 1, repeat from * across.
Row 2: With MC, purl.
Row 3: With B, repeat row 1.
Row 4: With B, p 1, * sl 1, p 1, repeat from * across.
Rows 5 and 6: With MC, k 1 row, p 1 row.
Row 7: With A, repeat row 1.
Rows 8-10: With A, p 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
Row 11: With MC, k 1, * sl 3, k 1, repeat from * across.
Row 12: With MC, p 2, * sl 1, p 3, repeat from * across, end sl 1, p 2.
Row 13: With A, sl 1, * k 3, sl 1, repeat from * across.
Row 14: With A, purl.
Row 15: With B, sl 2, * k 1, sl 3, repeat from * across, end k 1, sl 2.
Row 16: With B, sl 1, * p3, sl 1, repeat from * across.
Row 17: With A, k 2, * sl 1, k 3, repeat from * across, end sl 1, k 2.
Row 118: With A, purl.
Rows 19-22: Repeat rows 11-14.
Rows 23 and 24: With A, k 1 row, p 1 row. Repeating these 24 rows for
pat, work even until piece measures same as back to underarm above hemline.
Shape Armhole: Note; Bind off in k on right side; bind off in p on wrong
side, working in pat on all other sts. Bind off 3 sts at beg of arm side, then
dec 1 st every other row 2 (3-2) times—32 (35-36) sts. Work even until armhole
is 3" (3 1/4"-3 1/2") above first bound-off sts.
Shape Neck: Bind off 14 (15-15) sts at beg of center edge once, finish
row. Dec 1 st at center edge every row 4 (5-5) times—14 (15-16) sts. Work even
until armhole measures same as back.
Shape Shoulder: Bind off 5 sts at beg of arm side twice, 4 (5-6) sts
once.
Right Front: Work as for left front, casting on 13 sts for center band at
end of hemline row (on next row above hem). See Buttonhole Note.
Sleeves: With MC on No. 4 needles, cast on 35 (37-39) sts. Work in
ribbing as for back for 1" (cuff). Change to No. 8 needles. Continue in
ribbing, inc 1 st each side of next row, then every 3/4" 6 times, working
added sts into ribbing, 49 (51-53) sts. Work even until piece measures 8"
(9"-l0") from start or desired length to underarm.
Shape Cap: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side
every other row until 29 sts remain. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind
off 21 sts.
Collar: With MC and No. 8 needles, cast on 77 sts. For girls’
cardigan, work in ribbing as for back for 3", 2 1/2" for boys’
cardigan. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Finishing: Steam-press pieces lightly, keeping to gauge on ribbing of
back and sleeves. Do not press cuffs. Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew
side and sleeve seams. Turn under hems at lower edge of fronts; sew to wrong
side.
Fold center bands in half to wrong side (buttonholes meeting); sew in place.
Sew tog lower and top edges of center bands and facings. Work buttonhole st
around double buttonholes. From right side, with MC, work 1 row sc on each front
edge and across top edges of center bands. Sew cast-on edge of collar to neck
1/2" from each front edge. Steam-press seams. Sew on buttons.
