Valentine Craft Projects - Marbled Wood Hearts

Materials: Unpainted heart-shape pine ornaments, or 1/2
x 6-inch
length of lumber to make trims; Jigsaw; drill; sandpaper; Krylon Decorator Spray Paint in white, gold
metallic, and red; Small bucket; stirring stick String; clear
acrylic spray; 1/4-inch-wide ribbon (for trim).
Instruction:
If you are making your own heart ornaments,
cut pattern on a folded 4 1/4 x 4 3/4 -inch piece of paper. Trace outline
onto wood; cut out the shape with a jigsaw, and drill a small hole in the top.
Sand wood smooth.
To marbleize, work in a well-ventilated area.
Cover the work surfaces with newspapers.
Fill a bucket with water to within 2 inches of
the rim. Holding the paint can 8 inches above the water, spray metallic, white,
and red paint onto water at a 35-degree angle for 4 to 5 seconds. Overlap the
colors.
Thread a long string through the hole in each
ornament. Immerse the heart slowly through the paint, rotating it rather than
dunking it in the water. Watch paint form a skin atop the water. Pushing skin
away from the ornament with a stick, remove ornament. Suspend for 20 minutes or
until dry.
After dipping each ornament, clean paint from
water by collecting it on a stirring stick and wiping it on a rag. Then, spray
paint atop water again and dip the next heart; let dry.
To finish, spray the ornaments with clear acrylic: let dry. Add ribbon
hangers.
