Victorian Craft Projects - Holiday Ribbon Pillow
Size: 12"
square.
Materials: Two
12 1/2" x 25" pieces of gold metallic fabric. Two 3 1/2"
x 44" strips of red taffeta fabric. One yd. each of 1" wide
lace-edged ribbon in the following designs: red and gold brocade, green/
red/gold brocade, green/red/white brocade, red and green plaid, and red velvet.
2 1/2 yds. lace-edged brocade ribbon for ruffle. One 12" square pillow
form.
Note: 1/4" seam allowance included in all fabric
dimensions.
Pillow Front: Place
one metallic square right side up on surface. Place an 18" long piece of
red and gold brocade ribbon diagonally across center of square from lower left
-hand corner to upper right-hand corner. Place a 15" long piece of
green/red/gold brocade ribbon 1/2" away from center ribbon on both sides; pin
ribbons into place.
Working in lower right-hand corner and in
same diagonal direction, place a 6" piece of
green/red/gold ribbon 2 1/2" away from corner point.
Place a 9" red and gold ribbon 1/2" away from corner
ribbon toward center; pin ribbons into place. Repeat last
procedure with same color ribbons in upper left-hand corner—first
set of seven ribbons in place.
The following set of ribbons will be placed
on top of first set in opposite diagonal direction. Place an
18" long piece of green/red/white ribbon diagonally
across center of square from lower right-hand corner to upper
left-hand corner. Place a 15" long piece of plaid ribbon
1/2" away from center ribbon on both sides; pin ribbons
into place.
Working in lower left-hand corner and in
same diagonal direction, place a 6" piece of plaid ribbon
2 1/2" away from corner point. Place a 9" red velvet
ribbon 1/2" away from corner ribbon toward center; pin
ribbons into place. Repeat last procedure with same color
ribbons in upper right-hand corner—second set of seven
ribbons in place.
Working with first set of diagonal ribbons
and removing pins to "weave" ribbons, move ribbons
as follows: Red and gold ribbons should be moved on top of red
velvet ribbons and red/green/white ribbons; green/red/gold
ribbons should be moved on top of plaid ribbons. Sew ribbons
into place.
Ruffle: Sew fabric
strips together across two short edges to form longer strip. Fold one long edge
1/4" to wrong side; press. Fold same edge 1/2" to wrong side; sew hem
into place. Sew ruffle ribbon to right side of fabric 1/4" away from folded
edge.
Sew remaining short edges together to form
large loop. Work a line of basting stitches 1/4" in from raw edge. Pull
thread and gather ruffle to fit around pillow front.
Assembly: With right
sides together, sew ruffle to pillow front aligning raw edges.
With right sides together, sew back and front
pillow pieces along three edges; turn pillow to right side.
Insert pillow form. Fold raw edges 1/4"
to inside. Slip stitch across folded edges to close.
