Christmas Craft Projects - Wooden St. Nick Ornament

What you need: Wood, pine: 1-inch, 5 x 7 "; 1/4-inch, 2 x 3 "; Paints, acrylic: raspberry wine; tapioca; coffee bean; skintone; Cherokee rose; licorice; Paintbrushes; flat, No. 6; stencil, small; sponge, 1-inch; Disposable palette and pallet knife; Antiquing, bucket brown; Varnish, water base; Artificial greenery, 2 1/2"; Pine cone, small; Jute, 18 inches; Holt glue gun and glue sticks.

Miscellaneous items: tracing and transfer papers; scroll saw; drill with a 1/8" bit; fine sandpaper; paper towels; router with small corner round bit (optional)

What to do:

1. Trace the patterns below and transfer to appropriate pieces of wood. Cut out suing scroll saw. Drill holes as indicated on patterns and route edges if desired. Sand edges smooth.

2. Painting the front surfaces only, use the sponge brush to paint the clothes, hat, and sleeve with raspberry wine. Let dry.

Use the No. 6 brush to paint the bag and hand with coffee bean and the face with skintone. Let dry.

Use the stencil brush and tapioca to dab on St. Nick's beard and the fur on the coat, sleeve, and hat.

Use the wood end of the No. 6 brush to add an eye with licorice. Paint heart on mitten and cheek color with Cherokee rose. Let dry thoroughly. 

3. Sand entire surface of both pieces, sanding the edges more heavily.

Use paper towels to apply antiquing to all surfaces, rubbing off excess. Let dry several hours.

Spatter front of body and arm pieces by dipping stencil brush into licorice. Aiming brush toward surface, pull the palette knife across the bristles, pulling toward yourself. Let dry and apply two coats of varnish.

4. Hot glue the end of a piece of greenery to the back of the hand. Glue pine cone to greenery above hand.

Cut an 8" piece of jute and tie a knot in one end. Thread through hole in arm and body and knot remaining end; trim excess jute. Thread remaining jute through hole in hat and knot ends to make a hanger.

Back
