Pear Tree
Kindly contributed by: Marla Brichton
This pear tree is 16 inches high and is made of five pieces
of wire. For the center stem cut a piece of 14-gauge wire 16 inches long. Then
cut two pieces of 18-gauge wire (this is not quite so heavy) 19 inches long for the two lower branches and two pieces
of 18-gauge wire 18 inches long for the upper branches.
The bottom, around the center stem to a point 73 1/2 inches up the stem; then it is bent out at right angles for 53 1/2 inches and up for
53 1/2 inches. The lower left-hand branch is attached in the same way.
The upper right-hand branch is twisted around the main stem,
starting at the bottom, to a point 10 1/2 inches up from the bottom, then bent
out for 3 1/2 inches and up for 3 inches. The upper left-hand branch is then
attached in the same way.
Cut long strips of green crepe paper (about an inch wide) and
wrap around all stems, securing with a touch of glue.
Next, wire on as many miniature artificial pears as you like—I
used fourteen for mine. These fruits are available in craft supply and hobby
stores, as are the leaves. When the fruits are in place, wire on the leaves,
placing them so that they will conceal wires of the fruit.
Fasten pear tree (espalier) in container (I used a 3-inch
plastic flower pot painted gold, but you can also use ceramic or pottery) with
plastic modeling clay or floral clay.
If you like, you can purchase a small partridge at your craft
supply store to add character. Simply glue it to a branch.
