Snowman Earmuffs

Materials:
One 2-ounce skein of four-ply knitting worsted
is sufficient to make this pair of ear muffs; use a size 6 crochet hook. The
directions are for a head size 21. For added decoration, a snow man is fastened
to center of each muff.
Abbreviations: Ch (chain); sts
(stitches); sl st (slip stitch); sc (single crochet); lp (loop); hdc (half
double crochet)—thread over as for a dc, insert hook in st and pull lp
through, thread over and pull through all lps at once; rnd (round).
Gauge: 4 sts equal one inch. 2 rows make one inch.
Muff:
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 5 sc in first ch, join to
first sc with sl st.
Rnd 2: Draw out one fourth inch lp on hook,
(thread over and in same sc as sl st take up another lp) twice, thread over and
draw through all lps on hook—thus a hdc cluster is made. Make a second hdc
cluster in same st. Make 2 hdc clusters in each of the next 4 sts, join with sl
st to first hdc cluster made.
Rnds 2, 3: Draw out one-fourth inch lp on
hook, make 2 hdc clusters in same st as sl st, make 2 hdc clusters in each St
around, join as before.
Rnd 4: 2 hdc clusters in every fourth
st. Sl st all around, fasten off. Make 2.
Headband—Headband—Ch
84 (for a large size, make a longer ch), draw out lp on hook, make a hdc cluster
in each st of ch, sl st in ch at end, draw out lp and make hdc clusters across
other side of ch. Sl st in each st all around, fasten off, leaving a piece of
yarn to sew band together. Place ear muffs in proper position and sew to 8 sts
of edge of band.
Ties—Ties—Ch 2, 4 hdc clusters in last ch made, join
with sl st. Now place hook all the way through the center of sts and make 1 sc,
then (sc under the 2 threads on left side of sc) repeat until cord is about 12
inches long. Make 2. Join cords to ear muffs by pulling end of cord through the
center of last row of sl sts, fold over and sew.
Snow Man—Use white yarn. Cut 2 cards,
one 1 1/2 inches wide for arms, and the other 2 1/2 inches for body. Make arms first—cut
2 pieces of yarn 24 inches long, lay the 2 ends of yarn in center of the 1
1/2-inch card, hold with thumb and forefinger; wind a single strand of yarn 15
times around the card and over the 2 pieces of yarn. Cut yarn. Pull the ends of
yarn until both ends are even. Separate the two strands, slipping one to each
end of card. Tie each tightly at end of card. Slip off cardboard. Now bring both
double strands of yarn evenly across to the middle and tie one knot. Wrap each
piece 2 or 3 times (in opposite direction) around each arm and tie again. Place
the top of arms about one-half inch down from top of 2 1/2-inch card, wrap the
remaining yarn tightly 2 or 3 times around card and tie securely. Place two
short lengths of yam (about 6 inches long) under yarn at each end of card. Tie
end of yarn from skein to center of arms and wind the yarn 60 times around card
over the center of arms. Cut yarn. Tie each end but do not cut off—pull these
ends up to waist. With short lengths of yarn, wrap 2 or 3 times around for the
head and tie tightly, then wrap the waist and tie rather loosely. Cut off end
coming from head, but draw up the ends from bottom and tie with the 2 ends at
waist. Make two.
Split a short length of colored yarn, make
French knots for buttons and eyes and running stitches for mouth. Attach the
snowmen to ear muffs by pulling the ends at waist through the hole in center of
ear muff, pull the neck cord through the second row of hdc.
