Free Christmas Crochet Patterns - Poinsettia Placemats

Materials: Mercerized Crochet Cotton, 5 skeins each of yellow and light green and 2 skeins of medium green, size 20, 1 skein red, size 30. You also need 2 skeins six strand shaded red embroidery floss and a # 5 steel crochet hook. This is sufficient for 4 placemats. Work tightly for best results. The completed mat measure about 12 x 18 inches. An attractive braid in crochet is added around edge of mat. The poinsettia is appliquéd or sewn on after the foundation is completed.

Abbreviations: sk (skip) inc (increase) dc (double crochet) tr (treble) ch (chain) dtr (double treble) sp (space) tr tr (triple treble) bl (block) p (picot) rnd (round).

Foundation: Starting at left end with one strand each yellow and light green, ch 115.

Row 1: Sk 4 ch, dc in each of next 111 ch (to measure 11� inches).

Row 2: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, in each of next 111 sts, repeat this row through row 17.

Row 18: Ch 5, turn, sk first 2 dc, dc in next 110 sts.

Row 19: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, make dc across through 4th dc from sp at other end, ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in ch 5 sp, dc in third st of same sp (1 sp and 1 bl made at row's end).

Row 20: Ch 5, turn, sk 3 dc, dc in next dc (turning sp), 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc (1 bl ), ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc (1 sp), dc in each remaining st.

Row 21: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, make dc across through 4th dc from first sp, * ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in sp, * dc in next dc, repeat from * to *, dc in third st of end sp.

Row 22: Ch 5, turn and working in pattern make 1 sp, (1 bl, 1 sp) twice, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc for an inc, dc in each remaining st.

Row 23: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, make dc across through 4th dc from first sp, then work in pattern alternating sps and bls to end of row.

Continue in diagonal pattern (without incs) for 2 more rows.

Next Row: Ch 5, turn and work across in pattern alternating sps and bls. After last sp make dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc for an inc, dc in each remaining st.

Beginning with row 23, repeat these 4 rows 6 times (through row 50). Then continue in diagonal pattern without any more incs, for 6 more rows.

Next Row: Ch 5, turn and work in pattern of sp and bl alternated across. Repeat for 12 more rows (to measure 17 inches).

Edge: Ch 1, turn, 3 sc in first dc, work sc around mat making 3 sc in each corner. Join and fasten off.

Stretch and pin mat to 12 x 18 inches. Steam through a wet cloth, then press dry through a doubled dry cloth.

Braid: With 2 strands dark green, (ch 5, 3 dc in 5th ch from hook) repeated for distance around mat. Working back, make 3 more dc in same place with last 3 dc, ch 3,

Flower Spray-Stem: With 2 strands dark green, ch 80, sk 1 ch, sc in each of next 79 ch. Fasten off.

Leaf: With 2 strands dark green, ch 28, sc in second ch from hook, ch 2, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch, ch 2, sk 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 2, sk 1 ch, dtr in next ch, ch 2, sk 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 2, sk 1 ch, dtr in next ch, ch 2, sk 1 ch, tr tr in next ch, ch 2, sk 1 ch, dtr in next ch, ch 2, sk 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch, (ch 1, sk 1 ch, hdc in next ch) twice, ch 1, sk 1 ch, 3 sc in end ch. Make 4 leaves.

Flower-Center: With shaded red floss ch 7, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1, (sc in ring, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook for a p) 8 times, join to back lp of first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook for a p, sc in same sc, * ch 4 p, (sc, a p, sc) in back lp of next sc between ps. Repeat from * around (16 ps). Join and fasten off.

Petal: With 2 strands red floss, ch 23, sk 1 ch, then on balance of ch make 3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 dc, 7 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, (Sc, ch 3, sc) in end ch. On other side of ch make 2 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 7 tr, 3 dc, 3 hdc and 3 sc, sl st in first sc and cut with sewing end. Make 8 petals. Sew evenly spaced under edge of flower center. Pin flower spray on left side of mat and sew down around edge of motifs. Press again on back.
